About GMC C1500

The C/K series of pickup trucks was produced by General Motors from the model year 1960 all the way up until the model year 2002. The Chevrolet and GMC divisions were responsible for the marketing of the C/K series vehicles, which included a diverse lineup of automobiles. Despite the fact that this model line is most closely associated with pickup trucks, it also included chassis-cab trucks, medium-duty trucks, and served as the foundation for GM’s full-size sport utility vehicles. During the entirety of its production run, the model line engaged in head-to-head competition with both the Ford F-Series and the Dodge D-Series (later the Dodge Ram pickup).

The letter “C” indicated two-wheel drive, while the letter “K” indicated four-wheel drive and was used for both the model branding and the internal model code. There were four distinct iterations of the model line that were manufactured, including the “Action Line” and “Rounded Line” automobiles of the second and third generations, respectively. GMC rebranded itself for the fourth generation, switching to a single nameplate that simply read “GMC Sierra” (though the C/K designation was kept as an internal model code).

The Chevrolet 454SS was introduced as a high-performance version of the C1500 for the 1990 model year. The 454SS was a half-ton C1500 that was driven by a 7.4-liter V8 that produced 230 horsepower (172 kW), making it the most recent American high-performance pickup truck since the 1989 Shelby Dakota.

The 454SS was distinguished by its nearly monochromatic black exterior, gloss-black grille (with red-trim badging), body-color bumpers and mirrors, and the fact that it took much of its design from the Sport Equipment Package (borrowing the latter from the Cheyenne). The vehicle was given Silverado interior trim, which included model-specific bucket seats and interior colors in addition to the “454SS” bed-side decals that were used to identify it from the outside.

The 454SS was given a new suspension that included Bilstein gas-filled shock absorbers measuring 32 millimeters (1.3 inches) in diameter, a front stabilizer bar measuring 32 millimeters (1.3 inches) in diameter, and a 12.7:1 fast-ratio steering gear assembly in order to improve the vehicle’s manners on the road.

The 230 horsepower (172 kW) 7.4-liter V8 engine was directly taken from the R/V and C/K 3500-series trucks and mated to a 3-speed THM400 for the 1990 model year. The 454SS went through a series of improvements in 1991, the most significant of which were an increase in the engine’s output to 255 horsepower (190 kW), as well as the introduction of the 4-speed 4L80E overdrive transmission. The 454SS received an upgraded suspension that included 32 mm (1.3 in) Bilstein gas-filled shock absorbers, a 32 mm (1.3 in) front stabilizer bar, and a 12.7:1 fast-ratio steering gear assembly. Additionally, a locking differential was changed to a numerically higher 4.10:1 axle ratio. All of these upgrades were made in order to improve the vehicle’s handling.

In the beginning, the Chevrolet 454SS was only available in black paint with a red interior. However, in 1992, Chevrolet began offering a selection of paint colors for the 454SS, including monochrome exteriors in red and white, as well as blue, beige, and gray interiors.
