About Chevrolet K2500

In the 1991 model year, General Motors began manufacturing a C3500HD version of the C/K lineup for both Chevrolet and GMC. The C3500HD was designed to fill the void left by the absence of a chassis cab vehicle in the middle of the 2500/3500-series chassis cab trucks and the medium-duty Kodiak/TopKick. It was built from the ground up as a chassis cab vehicle. The C3500HD was never offered for sale to consumers due to its almost exclusive design for use in commercial settings.

The design of the C3500HD went through a number of iterations in order to accommodate the increase in its GVWR to 15,000 pounds. A heavier-duty straight frame was installed in the C3500HD chassis cabs in place of the drop-center frame rails that were shared by the C/K chassis cabs and the pickup trucks. The design of the heavier-duty frame resulted in several noticeable changes to the exterior design of the model line. For example, as a result of the cab being raised several inches, a filler panel was placed below the grille and bumper. Although it was manufactured in the factory as a C-series truck, the front fenders were modified with the plastic fender flares that are typically installed on K2500 trucks. These modifications were made to accommodate a wider front axle and larger tires (19.5 inches). Wheelbases of 135.5, 159.5, and 183.5 inches were available for purchase for this model line, which distinguished it from pickups and C/K chassis cabs.

The C3500HD came equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 as the standard engine, with a 7.4-liter V8 available as an option. In 1992, the 6.5-liter turbodiesel was made available as an option. Both the 4L80E 4-speed OD automatic transmission and the NV4500 5-speed manual transmission were mated to the engines in this vehicle. Both the front and rear axles were solid axles that were leaf-sprung. The front axle was a solid I-beam drop axle, just like on commercial trucks, and the rear drive axle was a Dana 80 full-floating axle (11-inch ring gear). Disc brakes were installed on all four wheels of the C3500HD, despite the fact that it had the same anti-lock braking system (ABS) capability as the pickup trucks.

Marker lights and sideview mirrors in either a “camper-style” or “west-coast” configuration were installed in the cab because it was primarily designed for use in commercial and fleet applications. The C3500HD was initially only available with a standard cab and the Cheyenne trim; however, in 1994, it was expanded to include the Silverado trim, and in 1996, a crew cab became an available option. During the time that it was manufactured, the C3500HD did not come with an extended-cab body option.

Although General Motors manufactured the K2500 and K3500 as chassis-cab trucks, the K3500HD was never manufactured by the company itself; however, aftermarket conversions resulted in the creation of several vehicles that were functionally equivalent (including a Dana 60 or Dana 70 front axle).

The C3500HD was the last model of the C/K lineup to be produced before it was taken off the market after the 2002 model year and not immediately replaced. At this time, the Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD is the vehicle that most closely functions as an equivalent (produced by Navistar).
