About Chevrolet Uplander
The Chevrolet Venture and the Chevrolet Astro were both replaced by the Chevrolet Uplander, which was a minivan that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from model years 2005-2009. The Uplander was sold over the course of a single generation and was available in short and long wheelbase varieties. Each version included second and third row seats that could be folded down or removed, as well as a V-6 engine and an automated transmission with four speeds.
Although it is heavily based on the minivans that came before it, General Motors first marketed the Uplander alongside its predecessors, the Venture and the Astro. The minivan as well as its rebadged variants, such as the Saturn Relay, Buick Terraza, and Pontiac Montana SV6, were manufactured at GM’s Doraville Assembly and were discontinued in 2008 when GM exited the minivan market, ceased production, and closed the Doraville Assembly plant. In other words, GM abandoned the minivan market.
The United States of America, Canada, Chile, Mexico, and the Middle East were some of the countries in which the Uplander was sold.
The Chevrolet Uplander received a higher overall score in the crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in comparison to its predecessor, the Chevrolet Venture. The Uplander, Pontiac Montana SV6, Buick Terraza, and Saturn Relay all received the highest possible rating of “Good” in the offset frontal crash test conducted by the IIHS. On the other hand, these vehicles were only rated “Acceptable” or “Poor” in the side crash test conducted by the IIHS, depending on whether or not they were equipped with the optional side airbags.
Uplander was Chevy’s final, and some say pitiful, attempt to compete with the swashbuckling combination of Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey. Poor sales forced Chevy to discontinue the Uplander and quit the minivan sector entirely in 2008, the same year the Traverse debuted. Though the Bowtie brothers will never admit it, the Traverse is Chevy’s de facto minivan replacement. And it’s doing extremely well.
