About Honda Del Sol
Produced by Honda from 1992 until 1998, the two-seater targa top car known as the Honda CR-X del Sol (also sold in other markets as the Honda Civic del Sol, the Honda del Sol, and the Honda CRX) was marketed under a variety of different names. Although it has a body that appears to be designed for a car with a mid-mounted engine, the del Sol is actually built on the same platform as the front-engined Honda Civic and was the model that replaced the Honda CR-X.
The convertible top is the inspiration for the car’s Spanish name, “del Sol,” which translates to “of the sun.” The del Sol came standard with a power-operated rear window that folded down and a detachable aluminum roof that folded down and stored on a hinged frame in the trunk. Certain markets offered both manual and automatic “TransTop” roofs for their customers to choose from. This is the very first open-air Honda that has ever been offered for sale in the United States.
The 1997 model was the last year of production and sales in North America, while 1998 was the final year everywhere else.
In 1992, for the 1993 model year, the CR-X del Sol was presented for the very first time in both Japan and Europe. Steel wheels measuring 13 inches in diameter came standard on the base model, which was sold in Japan under the name VXi and was only sold at Honda Verno dealerships there. The Japanese VXi and VGi versions both came equipped with a four-cylinder Honda D15B-VTEC engine, which was an entry-level SOHC VTEC engine that generated 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp).
In Europe, the “Si” model was known as the “ESi,” and it came equipped with a 1.6-liter SOHC VTEC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine as standard equipment. Along with wider tires, additional front and rear anti-sway bars, cruise control, and 14-inch alloy wheels, the Si also came standard with power side mirrors, rear disc brakes, wider tires, and additional front and rear anti-sway bars. Body-color-matched paint schemes were available as an upgrade for Samba Green models.
Additionally, a premium trim level known as the VTi was offered in Europe. This trim level featured the same 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC 4-cylinder engine that is offered in the VTEC version of the del Sol sold in North America.
