About Ford E-450
In 2002, Ford released the E-550 Super Duty as the E-Series model with the highest gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The E-550 was developed to bridge the gap between the pickup truck-derived F-450/550 Super Duty and the F-650 medium-duty trucks. It was only available in a cutaway-cab design and was only offered in one configuration.
Although it shared a number of its chassis components with the F-550 Super Duty, the E-550 could be identified by its grille, which was designed in the same manner as the grilles found on Super Duty pickup trucks (with a three horizontal slots between two vertical openings). The body of the van was modified to include a larger front bumper and plastic fender flares so that it could accommodate the wider and heavier-duty front axle (shared with the F-550 truck). Wheelbases ranging from 159.5 to 233.5 inches were available for the E-550, and it shared its powertrain options with the Super Duty and the E-350/450. The E-550 could be equipped with either a 6.8L V10 or a 7.3L V8 turbodiesel engine.
Ford ceased manufacturing of the E-550 at the conclusion of the model year 2003 for the vehicle.
The E-series received an exterior update in 2003, adopting the grille introduced by the 2002 E-550 Super Duty. The new grille moved the Ford Blue Oval emblem from the hood to the center of the grille (for the first time since 1991); the grille was dark gray or chrome depending on trim. The clear lenses on the front turn signals have been replaced with amber lenses (their first change since 1992).
