About Ford E-350

In 1982, Ford introduced an option for a 6.9-liter IDI diesel V8 engine that was manufactured by International Harvester. In 1988, this engine size was increased to 7.3 liters so that it could improve the fuel economy of the Econoline without significantly reducing the engine’s output. The Econoline 350 was the only model that offered the diesel V8 engines (or Club Wagons sold on the same chassis). The cutaway model was offered with either the larger gasoline V8s (5.8 or 7.5 L) or the diesel V8.

Ford stopped producing full-size vans with manual transmissions after the 1989 model year because of the growing demand for full-size vans equipped with automatic transmissions. After 1986, the standard manual transmission was changed to a floor-shifted 4-speed overdrive transmission, which had previously been a 3-speed column shift. In 1988, a Mazda-derived five-speed M5OD transmission took the place of the previous four-speed.
