About Chevrolet Spark
The Chevrolet Spark is a city car that is now in its fourth generation and is manufactured by General Motors’ affiliate GM Korea. Daewoo initially designed the vehicle, which debuted in 1998 as the Daewoo Matiz. General Motors purchased Daewoo Motors in 2002, and the car was marketed under many GM marques and nameplates.
The third generation was mostly marketed under the Chevrolet brand, such as the Chevrolet Spark in North America and the Holden Spark Barina in Australia and New Zealand. The fourth generation, also known as the Holden Spark in Australia and New Zealand, was introduced in 2015. It is also the foundation for the Opel Karl in Europe, the Vauxhall Viva in the United Kingdom, and the VinFast Fadil in Vietnam, which is manufactured under license.
In June 2013, a limited-production all-electric variant, the Chevrolet Spark EV, was released in the United States in select areas in California and Oregon. The Spark EV was General Motors’ first all-electric passenger car since the EV1 was withdrawn in 1999, and the company’s first to offer it for retail sale (the EV1 was available only on lease).
The Spark is compliant with South Korean “light car” (Korean:, romanized: Gyeongcha) laws, which regulate overall vehicle size and engine capacity while providing tax and parking cost benefits.
The Spark will be phased out after 2022.
Daewoo Matiz manufacture began in 1998, and it was marketed in South Korea and various European markets under the internal designation M100. The appearance is inspired on the Lucciola, a 1993 Fiat Cinquecento concept designed by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign and rejected by Fiat. The 0.8-liter gasoline engine and transmission were carried over from the Daewoo Tico, however it now has multipoint fuel injection. Daewoo’s Worthing Technical Centre in England was responsible for the engineering.
