About Chevrolet Lumina

Lumina APV minivan served as the replacement for the Celebrity station wagon, despite being mechanically unrelated to the Celebrity. The GM10 platform, which was later renamed the GM W platform and was shared by Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac, served as the foundation for the model line. The second generation of the Lumina was released in 1995, and it featured a significant overhaul of the car’s exterior compared to the first generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). The Chevrolet Impala was introduced for the 2000 model year, taking the place of the Lumina; the model line would continue to utilize the W platform all the way up until the 2016 model year.

Oshawa Car Assembly was the location where both generations of the Lumina were manufactured by General Motors Canada throughout the entirety of the Lumina’s production run (Oshawa, Ontario). Other large GM sedans served as the basis for the Chevrolet Lumina’s design when it was exported to markets outside of North America. From 1998 until 2013, the Holden Commodore was rebadged as the Chevrolet Lumina and sold in South Africa and the Middle East which is under the name Lumina.

The Chevrolet Lumina in North America was built on the mid-size GM10 platform, which was also used by the Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and Buick Regal. Despite the Lumina’s success, GM was widely chastised in the automotive press for being late to the game in introducing a direct aero-designed competitor to the Ford Taurus.
