About Chevrolet Express 2500
Chevrolet replaced the G-series Chevrolet Van with the Chevrolet Express for the 1996 model year (retaining Chevrolet Van for cargo vans). The Savana was the first all-new design for General Motors’ full-size van line since 1971, with passenger and cargo-van variants (the latter initially retaining the Chevrolet Van name), with GMC replacing the Vandura/Rally with the Savana. GM predicted significant growth in the full-size segment through the end of the 1990s alongside the first significant redesign of the model line in 25 years.
The front axle was moved forward 10 inches, effectively moving the front wheels out of the passenger compartment; in addition to improving front legroom, the design allowed for a lower step-in height (improving access). While the engines are the same as in the previous model line, the size of the engine cover has been reduced, increasing front passenger space. The Express was introduced with standard dual airbags on all vehicles under 8500 lbs GVWR (1500 and 2500 series); in 1997, dual airbags were standardized for all models of the model line.
The model line received a few minor functional changes for 1999. Chevrolet dropped the Chevrolet Van nameplate entirely, and the cargo van was renamed the Express Cargo Van.
The Express underwent a mid-cycle revision in 2003. The bodywork forward of the windshield was revised, in addition to significant frame and chassis upgrades. The newer front fascia (developed as an improved crumple zone) was designed to be more in line with the GMT800 full-size pickup trucks introduced in 1999; the model line also introduced some parts commonality between the two model lines. The dashboard was redesigned, and in addition to dual-stage airbags, the interior received multiplex wiring (adding increased functionality to the interior electrical system).
