About Cadillac DeVille
The Cadillac DeVille is a nameplate that has been used by Cadillac for eight generations. The nameplate was first used to indicate a trim level of the 1949 Cadillac Series 62 and was then used to designate a separate model in the brand’s range of offerings. The 2005 full-size sedan, which was Cadillac’s largest model at the time, was the final model to be marketed expressly as a DeVille model.
In 2006, the Deville moniker was abandoned, and the model line was carried through with some minor alterations as the Cadillac DTS. This nomenclature was adopted by the Cadillac STS and CTS, so it was consistent with their naming conventions.
The name “DeVille” comes from the French de la ville or de ville, which means “of the town.” A coupé de ville, from the French couper (to cut), i.e. shorten or reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside seat for two and an outside seat for the driver, and it was intended for use in the town or city (de ville). If the driver’s seat is outside, the vehicle is known as a sedanca de ville or town car.
During the 1949 Motorama, the first Cadillac “Coupe de Ville” was displayed. It had a dummy air-scoop, chrome trim around the front wheel openings, and a one-piece windshield and rear glass. It was built on a Cadillac Sixty Special chassis. To match the roof color, the interior was black and trimmed in gray leather, including the headliner. It had a telephone in the glove box, a vanity case and a secretarial pad in the rear armrest, power windows, and highly decorative chrome interior trim. GM President Charles E. Wilson used the prototype “Coupe de Ville” until 1957, when he gave it to his secretary. It got a dark Vicodec roof at some point during this time. The prototype “Coupe de Ville” was discovered and restored in the second decade of the twenty-first century, and it is now (2016-17) in a private collection in London, Ontario, Canada.
