About Lincoln Navigator

Because of the comprehensive redesign, the Navigator underwent a number of changes and improvements before it was introduced in May of 2002 for the 2003 model year. The Ford Navigator and the Ford Expedition, both of which were redesigned for 2003, continued to share a platform, but the Navigator differentiated itself from the Expedition in terms of its appearance and the various upscale features it offered. The redesign included a completely new exterior, the first one of its kind since the launch of the Navigator; the only parts of the previous generation’s vehicle that were retained were the roof panel and the front doors. The redesigned exterior featured a larger chrome waterfall grille, brighter quad-beam headlights with larger housings, revised chrome door handles set in color-keyed bezels, and slightly wider running boards.

Additionally, the running boards were lengthened by a few millimeters. Significantly different from the Expedition’s, the instrument panel and dashboard area found inside the Navigator were completely redesigned and unique to this model. The symmetrical “dual-cockpit” layout of the 1961 Lincoln Continental served as an inspiration for the design of the instrument panel and dashboard area. These areas were adorned with real walnut burl wood inserts, and the panels and switches were painted with a satin nickel color that had a low sheen. Backlighting for the controls and switches was provided by a total of 120 white LEDs, which added an additional touch of sophistication to the upscale interior design.
