About Lexus IS 250 AWD

Alongside the rear-wheel drive IS 350 (GSE21) sedan, the rear-wheel drive IS 250 (GSE20) and the all-wheel drive IS 250 (GSE25) went on sale in 2005 in Japan and North America, respectively, in the configurations of RWD (GSE20) and AWD (GSE25), respectively. The IS 250 RWD is equipped by default with a 6-speed manual transmission, and purchasers have the option of upgrading to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Only the automatic transmission is offered on the market for the other gasoline-powered IS sedans.

The IS 350 uses larger brake discs and calipers that were taken from the GS 430. The front calipers of the IS 350 have four pistons, whereas the front calipers of the IS 250 only have two pistons.

At the time of the IS 350’s release, Lexus touted its acceleration as “the fastest in its class,” citing results from third-party testing conducted by the automotive research company AMCI (see also: Lexus IS performance specifications). Some critics pointed out that the models of the second generation were Lexus’s first attempt to break into the market for sport compact vehicles and that they competed fairly well with their German counterparts. However, it was noted that its steering was not as communicative as that of some of its competitors, that the rear seat legroom (although it had been improved over the first generation), was still tight, and that the six-speed manual transmission was only available on the IS 250. These were some of the criticisms. On the other hand, the performance of the IS has also been lauded, such as in a comparison of Japanese luxury sports sedans conducted by Road & Track in February 2007, in which the IS 350 came in first place.

The IS 220d was discontinued and replaced with the more fuel-efficient IS 200d in 2010, which also coincided with the second refresh of the IS line. The improved consumption figures of the IS 200d were the result of engine retuning. In major markets, an additional all-wheel drive model, the IS 350 AWD, was introduced in addition to the IS 250 AWD, which expanded the available all-wheel drive options.
