About Lexus RX 400H
When the vehicle was stopped, decelerating, or being driven at slow speeds—less than 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour), the gasoline engine in the RX 400h turned off automatically, and the vehicle ran entirely on electricity (40 mph). [42] Not only did the hybrid drive in the RX 400h improve fuel economy, but with the help of the electric motor, the RX 400h was able to accelerate from 0 to 97 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour) in 7.3 seconds, which was faster than the gasoline-only RX. In spite of its improved performance, the RX 400h/Harrier Hybrid consumed approximately the same amount of gasoline as a compact four-cylinder sedan, and consequently, it was recognized in the United States as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV). Because of the electric motor, the vehicle’s passing power was significantly enhanced both at low and middle engine revs. The belt that drives the camshaft in the gasoline engine also turns the water pump in the engine. Alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner compressor are all beltless; rather than being tied to engine output, these components are powered by electric motors via the battery. This is done to improve efficiency and to account for the fact that the gasoline engine is turned off when the vehicle is operating solely on electric power.
The RX 400h was the vehicle that served as the launch vehicle for the Lexus hybrid lineup, which later expanded to include hybrid versions of other Lexus vehicles, such as the GS 450h and the LS 600h/LS 600h L, and in 2009, the first ever designated-hybrid (no gasoline model available) Lexus, the HS 250h. The RX 400h was the vehicle that served as the launch vehicle for the Lexus hybrid lineup.
