About Lexus ES Series
The Lexus ES is a series of mid-size executive cars that have been marketed by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota, since 1989. The Lexus ES has been produced in multiple generations, each of which offers V6 engines and a layout that consists of a front-engine, front-wheel-drive configuration.
The platform upon which the first five generations of the ES were built was shared with the Toyota Camry; however, the sixth and seventh generations of the ES are more closely related to the Avalon. Up until 1993, manual transmissions were available; in 2010, a smaller displacement inline-four engine became an available option in Asian markets; and in 2012, a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the vehicle was made available. Before the release of the related RX in 1998, the ES was the only vehicle produced by Lexus with front-wheel drive. Additionally, the ES occupied the entry-level luxury car segment of the Lexus lineup in North America and other regions until the IS was released in 1999.
As part of the official introduction of the Lexus brand, the very first generation of the ES, model number VZV21, made its public debut in January 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Lexus hurriedly developed the ES so that it could make its debut alongside their flagship sedan, the LS 400, so that the company wouldn’t have to introduce the nameplate with only one model.
