About Ford Escape

The Mercury Mariner was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model-year refresh of the Ford Escape in the United States by Ford’s Mercury division. The Mercury Mariner is the company’s first car-based SUV, and it sits below the Mercury Mountaineer in the lineup. The Mariner was officially available in the United States, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. The Mariner has a two-tone interior, turn signal repeaters borrowed from the European-market Ford Maverick (the Escape’s name in Europe), monotone cladding, and the Mercury “waterfall” front grille. Mercury, unlike its competitors, did not offer a manual transmission as part of its powertrain lineup. The Mercury Mariner was the first four-cylinder Mercury since the Cougar was discontinued in 2002. The Mariner Hybrid was introduced in 2006, expanding the lineup. Sales ended with the 2007 model, and it was replaced by a second generation, which was essentially a rebadged Ford Escape.

Ford presented former President Bill Clinton with a special “Presidential Edition” Mercury Mariner Hybrid on September 7, 2006. LED lighting, a 120-volt outlet, rear bucket seats, center console and rear seat fold-out writing desks, personal DVD players for each seat, a refrigerator, and increased rear seat legroom are among the custom features. The vehicle has also undergone several undisclosed security upgrades.

The Mariner Hybrid, like the Ford Escape Hybrid, is a “full” hybrid electric system, which means it can automatically switch between pure electric power, pure gasoline engine power, or a combination of electric battery and gasoline engine operating together for maximum performance and efficiency at all speeds and loads. The Mariner’s hybrid system uses regenerative braking when braking or decelerating, in which the electric drive motor converts the vehicle’s momentum back to electricity for storage in the batteries.
