About Chevrolet SSR

The Chevrolet SSR, also known as the Super Sport Roadster, is a retractable hardtop convertible pickup truck that Chevrolet produced between the years 2003 and 2006.

The 5.3-liter, 300-horsepower Vortec 5300 V8 was used for the 2003 and 2004 model years by General Motors. 7.7 seconds were needed to go from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h), while a quarter mile run was completed in 15.9 seconds at 86.4 mph. The LS2 V8 engine that produced 390 horsepower (291 kW) was also used in the C6 Corvette, the Trailblazer SS, and the Pontiac GTO. In addition, the 2005 SSR was the first year that a manual transmission option, the six-speed Tremec, was available.

The LS2 engine underwent some very modest changes for the 2005 model year, which resulted in an increase in its output to 390 horsepower (395-400 for the 2006 model year). The LS2 brought about a significant improvement in performance; the 0-60 mph (97 km/h) sprint time was stated as taking 5.29 seconds for the 6-speed manual version. In addition to that, insignia representing GM were installed on the car.

The “retro” styled design of the Chevrolet SSR was influenced by Chevrolet’s Advance Design vehicles from the late 1940s, in especially the 1947–1955 pickups. The car had a steel body retractable hardtop that was designed by Karmann and produced by ASC. It rode on a platform that was unique to it called the GM368, which was a variation of the highly adaptable GMT360 that was popular during that time period. Deep draw stampings, a forming process that had not been used in automobile stampings in decades, were used to make the body of the truck, namely the front fenders. Because this technique had not been utilized in automotive stampings in decades, it needed “relearning” of the forming technique. The SuperSport Roadster concept car that was displayed at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show served as the inspiration for the production model. In the 2003 running of the Indianapolis 500 automobile race, the pace car was an early-production SSR.

The design of the Chevrolet SSR, which has been described as having a “retro” aesthetic, was inspired by Chevrolet’s Advance Design automobiles from the late 1940s, most notably the 1947–1955 pickups. Karmann was responsible for the design of the car’s retractable hardtop for its steel body, which was manufactured by ASC.
