About Chevrolet Monte Carlo

The Chevrolet division of General Motors was the company that was responsible for producing and marketing the two-door coupe model known as the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The Monte Carlo was Chevrolet’s first attempt at marketing a personal luxury vehicle, and it took its name from the city in Monaco from which it took its inspiration. The model line was first introduced for the 1970 model year and continued to be produced through six generations and the 2007 model year, with a break from production between the years 1989 and 1994. Throughout the entirety of its production run, the Monte Carlo was essentially a closely aligned variant of the Pontiac Grand Prix.

The Monte Carlo shared the one-of-a-kind “A-Special” platform that was used by the Grand Prix from 1970 until 1972. After that, it moved to the more conventional A-body intermediate chassis that was used from 1973 until 1977. The model line went through significant reductions in size for the 1978 model year, but it was still classified as a midsized coupe. When General Motors first began producing front-wheel drive versions of its A-body cars in 1982, the rear-wheel drive version of the A-body platform that underpins this generation of the Monte Carlo was renamed the G-body.
