About Chevrolet Camaro

In April of 1965, the automotive press began publishing rumors that Chevrolet was working on a competitor to the Ford Mustang that was given the code name Panther. These rumors came before Chevrolet made any public announcement about the vehicle. On the 21st of June in 1966, General Motors sent a telegram to around two hundred automotive journalists with the following message: “…we ask that you set aside twelve o’clock on June 28 for an important SEPAW meeting. I really hope you’ll be available to assist in scratching a cat. The specifics will come later… (signed) John L. Cutter, Chevrolet public relations and SEPAW secretary.” The very same journalists got yet another telegraph from General Motors the following day, which stated, “The first and last meetings of the Society for the Eradication of Panthers from the Automotive World are scheduled to take place on June 28… (signed) John L. Cutter, Secretary of the SEPAW Committee for Chevrolet Public Relations” These telegrams had automobile writers scratching their heads.

The Statler-Hilton Hotel in Detroit played host to a live press conference that was hosted by General Motors on June 28, 1966. For the first time ever, press conferences were held simultaneously in fourteen different places across the country using telephone lines. Pete Estes, general manager of Chevrolet, kicked off the news conference by announcing that everyone present at the conference was a charter member of the Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World (SEPAW), and that this would be the first and last meeting of SEPAW. Estes then went on to say that the attendees of the news conference were all charter members of SEPAW. Estes then made the announcement that a new car line would be produced under the project designation XP-836.

The name of the new car line was Chevelle, which Chevrolet decided to use because it was consistent with other Chevrolet models whose names begin with the letter C, such as the Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette. It was his contention that the name “suggests the comradeship of close friends as a personal car should be to its owner” and that “to us, the term signifies just what we think the car will do go.”
