About Buick Regal
Since 1973, Buick has been producing and selling a series of mid-size automobiles under the name “Buick Regal.” The Buick Regal has been the company’s premier offering for customers seeking a premium mid-size or intermediate automobile for the vast majority of its production life. The model line was initially released as a submodel of the Buick Century, and it is presently in its sixth iteration of production. The Buick Regal was designed to compete directly with the Pontiac Grand Prix and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme from the 1970s all the way through the 1990s.
The Regal was at first presented to the public as a personal luxury coupe, but it was eventually developed into a whole series of models. To demonstrate its achievements in NASCAR racing, from 1982 to 1987, Buick developed the Buick Regal Grand National, Regal T-Type, and the limited-production Buick GNX. Forced-induction engines made a comeback in the 1990s, although this time superchargers were used instead of turbochargers. This occurred at the same time as the four-door sedan completely replaced the two-door coupe.
The first year that General Motors cars were offered for sale in China was 1999 with the Buick Regal; the same design was produced from 1997 all the way up to 2008. After the 2004 model year, Buick stopped producing cars under the Regal label in North America. The LaCrosse took its place as the company’s flagship sedan.
The Opel Insignia was debuted as Opel’s largest sedan for the 2008 model year, and Buick rebranded the model line as the Regal for the Chinese market at the same time. GM relaunched the Regal in North America in 2011, at the same time as they renamed the Insignia sedan for the North American market. The second generation of the Opel Insignia was released by Buick in 2018, with all manufacture taking place in Germany. Alongside the company’s first-ever liftback sedan, the Regal TourX was also the company’s first station wagon in 22 years.
As part of Buick’s transition away from producing car model lines, sales of the Regal were discontinued in North America after the year 2020.
