Audi’s A3 has also been around for a while, and it comes in a variety of flavors, from the entry-level 1.6-litre petrol to a high-performance turbodiesel. While a sports hatchback with an oil-burning engine under the hood may appear unappealing, Audi is at the cutting edge of technology in this burgeoning sector. And the addition of the marque’s renowned quattro 4WD system has changed the game entirely for performance diesels.
The most recent engine is a 130bhp 1.9-litre direct-injection TDI shared with VW and SEAT. This engine produces 310Nm of torque from as low as 1,900rpm. The performance is commendable, thanks to a six-speed manual gearbox that is quick and easy to use. However, due to the added weight of the quattro system, the overall combination here produces a harsher tone and feels less responsive from low revs than its front-wheel-drive twin. In terms of performance, the extra traction helps propel the TDI from 0-60mph in 9.1 seconds, despite a slight drop in top speed to 126mph.
However, the quattro diesel is most useful on slippery or icy roads, where it outperforms the petrol A3 4×4. Using all of the engine’s torque can make front-drive cars scramble for grip due to the oil-peaky burner’s power delivery, but this model finds traction instantly and without drama.
The A3 has always been a fun car to drive, and the Sport trim’s stiffened suspension and chunkier alloys firm up the ride without sacrificing comfort. While the steering isn’t razor-sharp, it’s well-weighted and provides enough feedback to complement the quattro-enhanced grip.
High-performance hatchbacks have traditionally been plagued by excessive fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. However, the introduction of sportier, more refined diesels means that drivers can have performance without paying a premium at the pump. The figures aren’t as impressive as for the two-wheel-drive version, but the quattro still gets 47.1mpg and emits 162g/km of CO2, which is well below the minimum tax bracket for company cars.
Audi A3 TDI Clubsport quattro is a concept car unveiled in 2008. It is an approach that Audi is taking to address both performance and the environment, and it is based on the three-door version of the Audi A3.
The concept vehicle is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel engine that generates 224 horsepower (167 kW) and 332 pound-feet (450 Nm) of torque. At the same time that it complies with the Euro 5 Diesel emission standards, it generates 113.8 horsepower (84.9 kW) per liter. It has a manual transmission with six different gears and a quattro all-wheel drive system.
The chassis is equipped with Audi’s Magnetic Ride Suspension system, which lowers the vehicle by 1.4 inches (36 mm) compared to the standard model. In addition to that, it features ceramic brakes up front, a four-link suspension out back, and electro-mechanical servo assistance for the rack and pinion steering.
Expanding the air intakes and modifying the odd are two of the exterior changes that have been made. The grill on the three-door model has also been widened. Fender flares that attach via bolts and a large rear spoiler have been installed. A flat-bottomed steering wheel and sport seats are some of the modifications made to the interior.
According to the manufacturer, the Audi R8 has a top speed of 149 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour) and can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds.
It is anticipated that it will achieve a fuel efficiency of approximately 48 miles per gallon (or 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers).
