About Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The Jeep Wrangler is a four-wheel-drive off-road SUV that has been produced by Jeep since 1986 and is presently in its fourth generation. The most recent model, the Wrangler JL, was debuted in late 2017 and is built at Jeep’s Toledo Complex.

From the mid-1940s through the 1980s, the Wrangler was likely an indirect evolution from the World War II Jeep, through the CJ (Civilian Jeeps) produced by Willys, Kaiser-Jeep, and American Motors Corporation (AMC). Although neither AMC nor Chrysler (after its 1987 acquisition of AMC) have claimed that the Wrangler is a direct descendant of the original military model, both the CJ Jeeps and the conceptually consistent Wrangler, with their solid axles and open top, have been dubbed the Jeep model.

All Wrangler models, like the Willys MB and CJ Jeeps before them, have a separate body and chassis, front and rear stiff live axles, a tapering nose design with flared fenders, a fold-flat windscreen, and can be driven without doors. They also include part-time four-wheel drive systems with a choice of high or low gearing, and open bodywork with removable hard- or soft-tops are standard. However, in comparison to the CJ line, the Wrangler series was expressly created to be safer and more comfortable on the road, in order to attract more everyday drivers, by updating its suspension, drivetrain, and interior. Trackbars and anti-roll bars were standard on all Wranglers, and from the 1997 TJ onwards, front and rear coil springs replaced the prior leaf springs.

Since 2004, the Wrangler has been available in long-wheelbase models known as the Wrangler Unlimited. Models from 2004 to 2006 had two doors and were longer. Only automatic transmission-equipped “Unlimited” models were sold in 2004. Both an automatic and manual 6-speed (NSG-370) were available in 2005. Since 2007, the long-wheelbase Wranglers have been four-door variants, providing an extra 20 inches (508 mm) of interior space. Three-quarters of all new Jeep Wranglers on the market by mid-2017 were four-door variants.

After the Jeep CJ series was discontinued in 1986, the Wrangler was introduced as a new model. It was updated in 1996, and totally revamped in 2006. In addition to the Wrangler name, each generation was given a designation: YJ (1986–1995), TJ (1997–2006), TJU’s (commonly known as LJs- 2004–2006 Unlimited models, or YJL in the Egyptian owners manual. ), JKU (2007–2017 Unlimited models) and JK (2007–2017), and the most recent JL model, introduced for the 2018 model year. The J8 name has been used on foreign military versions of the Jeep Wrangler, which was originally dubbed TJL when it was first constructed at Arab American Vehicle’s Egyptian plant.
