About Cadillac ELR
Cadillac’s new 2014 ELR is stunning. It appears to have been time-warped from a Gene Roddenberry–spec, 23rd-century future onto today’s roads, low, chiseled, aggressive, provocative, and uninhibited by any concession to practicality. It’s the most ambitious use of Caddy’s “Art & Science” design motif yet, with razor-sharp art and science transformed into science fiction.
But beneath the architectural beauty and the basic price of $75,995 is a platform built on the humble bones of the Chevrolet Volt. The Caddy, like the Chevy, runs almost entirely on electricity and features a traditional internal-combustion engine that powers a generator to keep the car’s lithium-ion battery pack charged. As a result, the ELR, like the Volt, is eligible for a federal bribe—er, tax credit—of up to $7500.
