About Pontiac GTO
The Pontiac GTO is a front-engine, rear-drive, two-door, four or five passenger automobile produced and marketed by General Motors’ Pontiac division over four generations from 1963 to 1974 in the United States, with a fifth generation produced by GM’s Australian subsidiary, Holden, for model years 2004 to 2006.
In the 1960s, the first generation of the GTO is credited with popularizing the muscle car market segment. Some consider the Pontiac GTO to be the start of the trend, with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models. The GTO was an optional package on the intermediate-sized Pontiac Lemans for the 1964 and 1965 model years. The vehicle identification number (VIN) for the 1964 GTO began with 22, while the VIN for the 1965 GTO began with 237. From 1966 to 1971, the GTO was sold as a separate model (VIN 242…). It was reintroduced as an optional package for the 1972 and 1973 intermediate LeMans. The GTO was an optional trim package on the compact-sized Ventura in 1974. (Source: Wiki)
