About Jeep Grand Cherokee
In the summer of 2010, Jeep released the fourth-generation WK2 Grand Cherokee as a model for the following year, 2011. It was first shown to the public at the New York Auto Show in 2009. In 2009, while it was still in the process of being developed, the management of Chrysler used it as an example of future products in order to convince federal regulators in the United States that Chrysler would be viable in the future for the purpose of applying for a federal loan. This led to Chrysler filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection the same year it all came to a head.
The WK2 Grand Cherokee retains the steel unibody construction of earlier generations of the vehicle. It differs from previous generations in that it has four-wheel independent suspension, which results in improved on-road maneuverability. Chrysler designed and engineered the platform and chassis that the WK2 and 2011 Durango use. Mercedes-Benz later used this platform and chassis for the W166 series of their automobiles.
