About Dodge Magnum
The Dodge Magnum is a nameplate that has been attached to a variety of different vehicles produced by Dodge at different times and for sale in different markets. The name was initially given to a large two-door coupe based on the Chrysler B platform that was marketed from 1978 to 1979 and sold in both the United States of America and Canada. The nameplate was brought back for a Charger-based station wagon on the rear-wheel drive Chrysler LX platform that was manufactured in Canada and sold on the American and Canadian market from the model years 2005 to 2008. Production of the vehicle took place in Canada.
Produced in Brazil from 1979 until 1981, the Dodge Magnum was the top-of-the-line model of the local Dart line and was known as the Magnum.
The Dodge Magnum was a two-door, rear-wheel drive sports car sold in Mexico. It was based on Chrysler’s M-body platform, which was also used for the American Dodge Diplomat and Plymouth Gran Fury. The “Magnum” was a sporty two-door K-car that Dodge marketed under that name from 1983 until 1988. Beginning in 1984, buyers could select an engine with a turbocharger.
In 2004, for the 2005 model year, the Magnum name was brought back for use on a station wagon that was based on the platform used by the Chrysler LX. The Magnum offered a choice of four different engines: the SE has a 190-horsepower, 2.72-liter LH V6; the SXT had a 250-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6; and the RT had a newly developed 340-horsepower, 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The SRT-8 has a 6.1-liter Hemi engine that produces 425 horsepower. In 2005, all-wheel drive was made available as an option on both the SXT and RT models. The Mercedes-Benz-derived five-speed automatic transmission is used in the SRT8, AWD SXT, and the RT, while the four-speed automatic transmission is used in all of the other models. From 2004 until the end of the model year 2008, the Magnum was manufactured at the Brampton Assembly Plant, which is located close to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The Dodge Magnum is built on the rear-wheel-drive Chrysler LX platform, with Chrysler executives confirming structural elements of the car’s foundation such as the toe board, safety cage architecture, and Mercedes-load-path Benz’s philosophy. Mercedes executives also confirmed that the car’s individual components are derived from the era’s Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W211) and S-Class.
