About BMW M3

The M3 is BMW’s most recognizable driver’s car, and the current model demonstrates that the company remembers what made many previous M models instant classics. The current M3’s standard configuration is a rear-drive 473-hp sedan with a six-speed manual transmission. If you choose the 503-hp M3 Competition, you’ll have to settle for an eight-speed automatic transmission. The M3 Comp is available with rear- or all-wheel drive, and its track-tuned chassis is stiff-riding to the point of resembling a race car. The rear-drive Competition model’s 60-mph time of 3.5 seconds in our testing was 0.4 second faster than our long-term base car’s. Both versions will excite you on the road or track, and the base model can transform into a surprisingly comfortable cruiser if you’re patient enough to solve its Rubik’s Cube of drive modes. Rivals such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing do a better job of connecting with the driver—but the M3 is still a joyously visceral experience.
