About BMW 328xd/328

BMW created a car that became a sportscar and racing legend in the 328 Roadster. This compact two-seater with leather straps across the bonnet, like few others before it, came to dominate the racing scene in Germany and around the world in the second half of the 1930s. The 328’s bodywork, with remarkably clean and sleek styling for its time and integrated headlamps, established a trend that would last well into the 1950s. A small number of 328 models with streamlined aluminum bodies even served as a styling model for an entire generation of postwar road sportscars.

BMW had only seven years of car manufacturing experience when the 328 hit the market. In 1935, the BMW board of directors decided to create a car that could compete with more powerful rivals in international racing circuits, such as Alfa Romeo. However, the fledgling automaker lacked the financial resources as well as the time to develop a completely new sports racer in the targeted two-litre class. The existing two-litre 319/1 Roadster, on the other hand, provided BMW with an excellent foundation for future development.

The 319 engine originally designed by Rudolf Schleicher was bored out by a millimetre to give a displacement capacity of 1971 cc for the new roadster model to fully exploit the popular two-litre class. Furthermore, hemispherical combustion chambers and V-shaped sticking valves were critical for improving performance in a high-powered engine. As a result, a new aluminum cylinder head with vertical inlet ports for triple Solex downdraught carburettors was built.

However, due to financial constraints, the far from ideal valve operation with a camshaft positioned beneath had to be retained. Developing the sophisticated new cylinder head had already eaten into the limited budget. To retain the benefits of an overhead-type engine, a rather unconventional solution was found, one that some experts considered completely unworkable. The exhaust valves were also controlled by the intake valves’ rocker shaft using intermediate transverse pushrods. The end result was visually indistinguishable from a DOHC power unit, which caused some consternation in the automotive press.

Though not entirely novel, this technical solution sparked heated debate. The success of the engine, however, vindicated the BMW designers. This power unit, which freely delivered 80 bhp, combined with Fritz Fielder’s lightweight chassis and the 328’s almost graceful, open bodywork proved an almost unbeatable combination. The BMstylists had achieved a remarkable feat with their bodywork design for the new roadster model. At first glance, the 328 appeared to be a direct descendant of the 319/1: the low-slung basic design with flowing wings appeared to have been retained. However, upon closer inspection, the 328 revealed a completely new body. The bonnet was significantly longer and hinted at the power contained in the six-cylinder beneath, while the overall profile was much more stretched and pounded. One eye-catching feature were its headlamps, which were recessed into the cowling and, along with the covered rear wheels, reflected the design’s improved aerodynamics. The cockpit, designed around the driver and co-driver and brimming with switches and appealing instruments, exuded both elegance and racing flair. There were no frills or frippery to distract from the BMW 328’s primary purpose: functionality reigned supreme.
