About Mercury Sable

The midsize front-wheel-drive Mercury Sable returns for the 2005 model year with a more compact lineup and two new body colors. On LS models, a leather and wood steering wheel is now standard. Leather seating surfaces, automatic climate control, and automatic headlights are all part of the new LS Premium Package.

The Sable and its Ford Taurus cousin were restyled for the 2000 model year. Ford’s version is by far the most popular. The Sable is almost certainly nearing the end of its lifecycle, but Mercury has introduced a new Montego sedan for 2005 and will offer a new Milan sedan in 2006.

Despite its close relationship to the Taurus, the Sable has a more conservative and traditional appearance. It has a vertical-bar grille that is chrome-plated. The Sable is one of the longest midsize sedans on the market, with a 108.5-inch wheelbase and an overall length just under 200 inches.

The Sable has 16-inch all-season tires and six-spoke aluminum wheels on the LS models. On LS models, fog lamps and bodyside moldings with bright inserts are standard.

The Sable sedan can seat either five or six people. Sedans with five seats have a floor-mounted gearshift and a front center console. Six-passenger models have a flip-fold center seat that can be configured to include a front center armrest with cup and coin holders, as well as cassette storage.

A cassette player, air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry, and power windows, locks, and mirrors are all standard features on the GS. A six-speaker Mach audio system with a six-CD changer is available as an option. The trunk volume of the Sable is 16 cubic feet, and the rear seatback splits 60/40 for additional cargo space. The LS is available with a Platinum Edition package.

Buyers can select between two 3.0-liter V-6 engines. The GS’s overhead valve V-6 produces 153 horsepower. In the LS, a more powerful dual-overhead-cam V-6 produces 201 hp. Both engines are paired with a four-speed automatic transmission with adaptive shift control programming. Mercury also offers a 155-hp flexible-fuel version of the overhead-valve V-6.

The front airbags deploy at one of two inflation levels depending on the severity of the crash and whether or not the seat belts are buckled. Front occupants can opt for side-impact airbags. The LS comes standard with antilock brakes, while the GS has them as an option. Front seat belt pretensioners and retractors take up slack in the event of a collision.
