About Mercury Grand Marquis

This is a eulogy rather than a model review. The Mercury Grand Marquis was born in 1978 and lived a long and fruitful life, beginning at a time when land yachts with big V8 engines were the norm rather than the exception. It, like Joan Rivers, has gone through several makeovers, and, like most senior citizens, some of its creaky mechanicals have been replaced. But, through it all, the Grand Marquis has stayed true to its roots.

The 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis receives no changes for its final year on this good earth and continues to live by the mantra “they don’t make ’em like they used to.” Indeed, its large dimensions allow three people to fit comfortably in both the front and backseats, and its trunk is large enough to accommodate multiple pieces of luggage for that trip to the airport. Anyone who has ever taken a taxi in a Grand Marquis (or the Ford Crown Victoria, this car’s twin) can attest to this. The traditional body-on-frame chassis is also a stalwart of sturdiness, simplicity, and dependability, as evidenced by our nation’s law enforcement community.

Unfortunately, for a variety of other, more important reasons, they don’t make ’em like the Grand Marquis. This Mercury’s body-on-frame design allows it to jiggle and shake over bumps like a sumo wrestler during an earthquake. The handling of the car is ponderous, and the steering is slow, so you don’t have much faith in its ability to stay under control. Then there’s the engine, a 224-horsepower V8 with a barely respectable 275 pound-feet of torque mated to an antiquated four-speed automatic. The fuel economy of this Mercury (like its body structure) is truck-like. Finally, despite the fact that the cabin is spacious, legroom is limited, despite the car’s large footprint.

Given these elderly characteristics in a youthful world, the Grand Marquis has been difficult to recommend for the better part of the last two decades. As it joins the rest of the Mercury family in the big garage in the sky, the 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis leaves behind a slew of impressive, thoroughly modern big sedans that provide the comfort, space, performance, and fuel economy that today’s buyers should expect, as well as a few modern conveniences that the Grand Marquis never got around to offering. These vehicles include the 2011 Buick LaCrosse, 2011 Chrysler 300, 2011 Ford Taurus, 2011 Hyundai Genesis, and 2011 Toyota Avalon.

The Lincoln Town Car, the Grand Marquis’s cousin, has survived. That’s something we wouldn’t buy either. Funeral services will be held at the Ft. Lauderdale airport near the Hertz rental desk.
