About Mercury Mountaineer

From 1996 to 2010, Mercury sold the Mercury Mountaineer, a mid-size luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV). The vehicles shared many features with the Ford Explorer and were nearly identical in terms of hardware. They were styled differently on the outside, and the Mountaineer was positioned with a more upscale interior, with the Mountaineer’s MSRP being $1,000-$6,000 higher than the Explorer. It was last redesigned for the 2006 model year, with a new frame that resembled the previous model.

After the media highlighted a number of rollovers involving Explorers and Mountaineers equipped with Firestone tires, there was some uproar. The Mountaineer has received high marks for its handling and stability. In Canada, the Mountaineer was never sold. The Mountaineer was phased out as part of the Mercury brand’s demise in late 2010.

The third-generation Mercury Mountaineer was introduced for the 2006 model year, replacing the Ford Explorer. Though the wheelbase remained unchanged, the model line rode on an all-new chassis that gained nearly three inches in length. Unlike the Explorer, the third-generation Mountaineer retained many styling elements from the previous generation, including clear-lens taillamps, fender-mounted turn signal repeaters, larger wheels, satin-silver trim for the sideview mirrors and bumpers, and larger Mercury emblems on the grille and tailgate.
