About Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG
The C43 AMG, which was powered by a V-8, has been replaced by the C32 AMG, which is powered by a supercharged version of Mercedes’ 3.2-liter, twin-ignition, 3-valve 90-degree V-6. This engine produces 354 horsepower at 6100 revolutions per minute and 332 lb-ft of torque at 4400 revolutions per minute.
A volumetric supercharger with a boost pressure of 14.5 psi and driven by a multiple V-belt has been selected by the development engineers at AMG, which is now DaimlerChrysler’s own high-performance division. This decision was made in accordance with the standard procedure followed by DaimlerChrysler.
In place of a blower of the Roots type, which is what is found in the Mercedes-Benz 200 and 230 Kompressor engines, the AMG engineers have opted to use a Lindstrom twin-screw supercharger manufactured by IHI. This is the same type of supercharger that is found in the Miller-cycle V-6 engine found in the Mazda Millenia, but it is of a larger size. Its twin matching helical rotors turn at 20,700 rpm when the engine is operating at full speed, and they are capable of producing compressed air at a rate of up to 1200 kg (2645 lb) per hour.
Mercedes covers all bases with hatchback, wagon, and high-powered sport sedan versions of the C-Class for 2002.Beginning at $25,000, the C230 Kompressor Sport Coupe (actually a hatchback) puts the three-pointed star within reach of more people seeking Mercedes safety, engineering, and, yes, status. The baby Benz can reach 60 mph in 7.2 seconds thanks to the same supercharged (“kompressor” in German) 2.3-liter inline four found in the SLK 230 roadster and a six-speed manual gearbox.
The fact that this is the entry-level C does not imply that the standard feature set is lacking. Dual-zone climate control, aluminum cabin accents, 16-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker sound system with cassette deck (a CD player is optional), a tilt and telescopic steering wheel with stereo and trip computer controls, and an eight-way (manual) adjusting driver seat are all standard. Among the available options are leather seating and a large “Panorama” sunroof. And, as one would expect from a Mercedes, the new hatchback is loaded with high-tech safety features like four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and Brake Assist, electronic stability control, and front, side, and head airbags.
