Infiniti began using a new naming convention beginning with the 2014 model year. Under this system, the names of all passenger cars are prefixed with the letter “Q,” while the names of all sport-utility vehicle models begin with “QX.” The Infiniti G was supposed to be replaced by the Infiniti Q50; however, for the 2015 model year, the G37 was resurrected as the Q40. The Infiniti Q50 was supposed to replace the Infiniti G.
The Infiniti G Coupe from the fourth generation (V36) served as the foundation for the first generation of the Q60. The previous president of Infiniti, Johan de Nysschen, stated that the company required “a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio.” This resulted in the development of this situation. Beginning in 2014, the letter “Q” would be appended to the registration of all passenger cars, followed by a two-digit number. Those numbers would indicate the vehicle’s position in the Infiniti hierarchy if it were available.
