About Fiat 500
The Fiat 500 is a rear-engined, four-seat small city car that Fiat Automobiles produced and marketed from 1957 to 1975 in two-door saloon and two-door station wagon bodystyles.
It was introduced in July 1957 as the Nuova (new) 500 as a successor to the 500 “Topolino” as a low-cost and practical small car. The 500 was 24.5 centimetres (9.6 inches) shorter than Fiat’s 600, which debuted two years earlier, and was powered by a 479 cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine. It was considered one of the first purpose-designed city cars.
Dante Giacosa received the Compasso d’Oro industrial design award for the Fiat 500 in 1959. It was the first time it had been given to the automotive industry.
On the 50th anniversary of the Nuova 500’s introduction, Fiat introduced a new 500 that was stylistically inspired by the 1957 Nuova 500 and featured a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive.
Fiat celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2017 with an exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and received one of the pptArt Corporate Art Awards at an event hosted by President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinal Palace.
An all-new Fiat 500 model with four seats, three doors, and a hatchback configuration was first announced in May 2006 and made its debut in March 2007 – exactly fifty years after the debut of the very first Fiat 500. The Fiat 500 from 2007 takes its cues for its exterior design from the Fiat Trepiùno concept car from 2004.
As a contemporary reinterpretation of Dante Giacosa’s 1957 original rear-engined Fiat 500, the new model has a distinct retro style, similar to that of the Volkswagen New Beetle and the BMW MINI, which follows the pattern set by those two automobiles. Midway through 2007, production began in facilities owned by Fiat in Tychy, Poland, and then later in Toluca, Mexico. In addition to the convertible body style, which was introduced in 2009, a wide variety of trim levels, equipment packages, and performance levels are available.
The 500 is also available in an Abarth trim, which features a sport exhaust, suspension, and transmission in addition to a 1.4L Turbo Petrol engine.
The second-generation Ford Ka is built on an automobile platform that was derived from the Fiat 500.
