About BMW 745i

Behold, the most cutting-edge mode of individual transportation available in the 21st century. Even though it’s not a ballistic jet pack that runs on Weetabix, the BMW 745i still manages to pack a pretty significant punch in its own right. On the hypothetical timeline that connects the automobiles of today with the ballistic jet packs of… whenever, the 745i may be remembered as the point at which the levers, wheels, and pedals that have tangled up interiors for the past 100 years began their evolutionary ascent into a single red button. This is significant because it marks the beginning of the end of the era in which interiors were cluttered with a confusing assortment of controls.

On the other hand, the 745i might also be remembered as a crazy attempt to replace intuitive controls with overly complicated silicon, something like an electric paper clip with a rental agreement. One of our more experienced editors needed ten minutes just to figure out how to start it (insert the key, step on the brake, then push the start button), five minutes to drop it into gear (pull the electronic column shifter forward, then up for reverse or down for drive), and then two weaving miles to decode the arcane seat controls (select which quadrant of the seat you wish to adjust from one of the four buttons located near your inboard thigh, then maneuver the adjacent joystick.

When does it become easier to perform a task, such as disabling traction control, using the iDrive rather than a dash button? Never. When do you become familiar enough with the iDrive to be able to access and change its most important functions quickly and with only a brief eye diversion? Within three days.

See, BMW was wise enough to assume that the strap-it-on-and-go buyer—that is, the vast majority of buyers—will ignore the posted placards and never wrinkle the spine of the multivolume owner’s manual. So they created a help system that should be the new owner’s first stop in a 745i.

Simply press the iDrive button to view a map of the knob’s eight directional points, with each destination representing a broad topic such as climate control, navigation, entertainment, and so on. Swipe in the “Help” direction (southeast), and configure the display so that a brief explanation of each icon touched by the cursor appears in the right window of the central TV screen. This effectively breaks the iDrive’s initially perplexing abbreviation and pictograph code.
