About BMW 540i
Over the course of the past few years, we have voiced numerous complaints about the fact that the four-door BMWs of today lack the sports-sedan prowess of the models from earlier generations. As the brand’s SUVs continue to ratchet up the sporting attitude, the brand’s sedans—particularly those without a M in their alphanumeric names—are left to play a different role, catering to buyers who are specifically looking for a comfortable, long-distance cruiser. This is especially true for models that do not have a M in their alphanumeric names.
In contrast to the larger 5- and 7-series cars, which have developed (or devolved, depending on your point of view) into ultimate comfort machines, the 3-series still provides a decent level of driving satisfaction. We recognize that there is a market for quietly competent and sedately mannered luxury sedans, and the 2021 BMW 5-Series receives a number of enhancements to further that mission. This is disappointing news for driving enthusiasts; however, we acknowledge that there is room in this world for such vehicles.
The 2021 model looks more modern and expensive than previous years thanks to a larger front grille, headlamps designed with a more assertive aesthetic, and new wheel designs. Inside, BMW added a larger infotainment display that measures 12.3 inches and comes standard with in-dash navigation, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. There is no additional cost for any of these features. The new perforated faux-leather upholstery with contrast stitching adds a touch of elegance to the models that come with only basic features. Our test vehicle was a well-equipped all-wheel-drive 540i xDrive that rang in at $78,235. It came with the optional nappa leather in a lovely mocha-brown hue, as well as the Luxury Seating package for an additional $1000, which included 20-way adjustable front seats with heat and ventilation.
Under the hood, the turbocharged 335-horsepower inline-six engine now has an upgrade in the form of a new 48-volt motor-generator, which is more important than the cosmetic changes that have been made. It serves to enhance the silkiness of the six and sharpens throttle response, but when we put the 540i through its paces on the test track, it did not make the vehicle any faster. In point of fact, the 2021 model is just as fast as the 2017 model, which was our most recent benchmark. However, the acceleration time of 4.7 seconds to 60 miles per hour is still plenty quick, and the 540i zipped through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds at 106 miles per hour. These findings are comparable to those obtained from our previous testing of an Audi A6, which was equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and a similar 48-volt system. This vehicle was able to complete the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds at 104 miles per hour and reach 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds.
The wide body of the 540i translates to a spacious cabin with enough room for four adults to travel comfortably. Although we wish the interior design had more flair than the less expensive 3- and 2-series models, we appreciate the material quality and precise construction. The 20-way adjustable seats give you plenty of options for finding the perfect driving position, but our tester’s thrones lacked the $1000 massage function that would have pampered our backsides.
