About BMW 528xi
The 2008 BMW 5 Series has a new feature, but only for those who have been paying attention. The updated 2008 BMW 5 Series will appear identical to the 2007 model to the untrained eye. What’s new are some minor exterior changes, updated engines (including one completely new power plant), and more standard and optional comfort features. The majority of the changes do not significantly alter this luxury sedan’s market position, and they are unlikely to entice the uninitiated.
Congratulations if you can tell the difference between a 2007 BMW 525i and a 2008 BMW 528i — one of the models I tested — when they pass you on the street. Most people will need to slowly circle the car to see the changes (hint: check out the head- and taillights).
The 5 Series’ design was a radical departure for BMW when it debuted in 2003, but its dramatically raked hood and squared-off rump are now more widely used by many automakers, implying that the 5 Series now blends in fairly well with the flow of traffic.
The 550i’s optional Sport Package includes new exterior trim that gives it the appearance of the more expensive, performance-oriented M5, but without the additional $20,000 that the 500-horsepower rocket commands. The new 550i Sport Package, which includes 19-inch wheels and tires, more aggressive front and rear body panels, and black tailpipes, was tested by me. The package did change the appearance and feel of the car; despite being painted white, it was the most menacing white vehicle you could imagine.
