About Mercury Mariner
For a long time, Mercury vehicles were little more than upscale copies of Ford models. So it is with the 2011 Mercury Mariner, a slightly more upscale variant of the Ford Escape. The fascinating twist is that the Mariner will be discontinued after 2011, as Ford has decided to eliminate the Mercury brand.
The Mariner is still a good little crossover in certain regards. In terms of power, the 240-horsepower V6 is outgunned by the 264-hp V6 in the Chevrolet Equinox and the 268-hp V6 in the Toyota RAV4, but it’s more than enough to propel the Mariner around with zest. In terms of production, fuel economy, and real-world performance, the base-model Mariner’s four-cylinder engine is respectable when compared to the fours of its competitors.
The Mariner also includes a variety of high-end features that most competitors do not, such as Ford’s Sync voice-activated multimedia system. When paired with a Bluetooth-enabled phone, Sync can also deliver traffic updates and turn-by-turn directions. The Mariner also includes MyKey and an automated parallel parking assist system (which allows parents of teenage drivers to set electronic limits for vehicle speed and stereo volume). Other Mariner advantages include great crash test results and the option of a hybrid model (reviewed separately).
However, the Mariner’s profile, like that of the Ford Escape, has a few significant flaws. One issue is that the rear drum brakes provide poor braking performance. Another issue is the back seats, which do not recline for passenger comfort and are difficult to move forward for increased load capacity (although the load floor is usefully flat as a result).
For some buyers, the 2011 Mercury Mariner’s numerous appealing convenience features will more than compensate for its minor flaws. They may also be lured by a killer price, as the Mercury brand will be phased out in 2011. However, we recommend that compact crossover buyers also examine the comfy 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, refined 2011 Honda CR-V, elegant 2011 Kia Sportage, sporty 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander, stylish Nissan Rogue, flexible Subaru Forester, and powerful 2011 Toyota RAV4.
The Mercury Mariner compact SUV is available in four trim versions for 2011: base I4, base V6, Premier I4, and Premier V6. The I4 and V6 variants, as expected, have different engines under the hood; no other attributes distinguish these vehicles.
Standard equipment on the base versions includes 16-inch alloy wheels, foglights, privacy glass, full power accessories, air conditioning, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and a four-speaker CD stereo with an auxiliary audio port and satellite radio. Rear parking sensors, ambient interior lighting, heated front seats, leather upholstery (microfiber suede inserts are a free option), a power driver seat, a six-speaker audio, Sync, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror are all standard on Premier versions.
