About BMW M3 Sedan
The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series created by BMW M GmbH, the company’s in-house motorsport division. Since the introduction of the E30 M3 in 1986, M3 models have been produced for each generation of 3 Series.
The initial model was only available in coupé form, but a convertible body style was added soon after. During the E36 (1994-1999) and E90 (2008-2012) generations, M3 saloons were available. Since 2014, the coupé and convertible models have been rebranded as the 4 Series range, with the high-performance variant becoming the M4, so the M3 was only available as a saloon in that generation of 3 Series. For the first time, the M3 estate (Touring) was produced alongside the saloon in 2020.
The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 Series and was designed as a homologation special to meet the requirements of the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built. It was first shown to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985, and production ran from March 1986 to June 1991.
