About BMW X3

The BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW since 2003 and based on the BMW 3 Series platform. BMW markets the crossover, now in its third generation, as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company’s proprietary term for its X-line of vehicles.

BMW designed the first-generation X3 in collaboration with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria, who also manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW. The second-generation X3 was built at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. The third-generation BMW X3 is manufactured at BMW South Africa’s Rosslyn plant, which underwent a major upgrade to prepare for X3 production, which replaced the plant’s long-running 3 Series production. Every year, approximately 76,000 units will be produced there.

It was regarded as the market’s first mid-size, premium SUV. Only since 2008 has the X3 begun to compete with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (renamed GLC-Class since 2016) and other SUVs in this segment. It is currently positioned below the larger X5 and X6, and above the smaller X1 and X2.

The BMW iX3 is an all-electric variant.
