About BMW 228i

If you absolutely must have a new BMW in your driveway but want to spend as little money as possible, the 2023 2-series Gran Coupe is the vehicle for you. The 2-series GC, the German automaker’s entry-level model, is a small sedan with the difficult task of conveying the brand’s ethos without the benefit of a rear-wheel-drive chassis.

The 2-series Gran Coupe, unlike the 2-series coupe and 3-series sports sedan, is built on a front-wheel-drive platform borrowed from Mini. The handling is fun, and a pair of turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains provide plenty of punch, but neither the 228i nor the racier M235i feel as well-balanced as their stablemates. The interior, at least, is nearly as luxurious as that of other BMWs, and it competes well with rivals such as the Acura Integra and the Audi A3.

For 2023, BMW’s smallest sedan receives no changes and carries over to the new model year with only a slight price increase.

The 2 Series is built on the UKL2 architecture and has a multi-link rear suspension system. As a result, despite its similar name, the F22 2 Series coupé and convertible are mechanically unrelated. The F44 has 33 mm (1.3 in) more knee room, 14 mm (0.6 in) more headroom, and a 40 litre (1.4 cu ft) larger boot capacity at 430 litres than the F22 2 Series (15 cu ft). The front hood, fender panel, dashboard, and suspension are all shared with the F40 1 Series.
All gasoline and diesel engines have particulate filters and meet the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard. AdBlue selective catalytic reduction is also used in diesel engines.

The 218i is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The 228i xDrive, M235i xDrive, and 220d only come with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 220i comes only with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
