About BMW 1 Series M

The BMW E81 is a three-door hatchback, the BMW E82 is a coupé, the BMW E87 is a five-door hatchback, and the BMW E88 is a convertible. These compact cars are all part of the first generation of the BMW 1 Series. Between the years 2004 and 2013, BMW produced the E81, E82, E87, and E88 generations of automobiles, which are sometimes referred to collectively as the E8x. In the BMW lineup, the E8x took the place of the 3 Series Compact as the model that serves as the entry level vehicle.

All of the models featured rear-wheel drive, which is an unusual configuration for hatchbacks because the majority of cars in this market segment feature front-wheel drive. There was a turbo-diesel engine with four cylinders, a naturally aspirated gasoline engine with four cylinders, a naturally aspirated gasoline engine with six cylinders, and a turbocharged gasoline engine with six cylinders (the latter only available on coupe and convertible models).

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission and is propelled by a turbocharged inline-six engine derived from the BMW N54. It is considered to be the forerunner of the BMW M2 and was only available in coupe form when it was manufactured.

After the debut of the F20/F21 1 Series in 2011, production of the E81/E87 hatchback models began to wind down. On the other hand, the E82/E88 coupes and convertibles continued to be manufactured right up until 2013, when they were finally phased out in favor of the F22/F23 2 Series models.

BMW considered incorporating the Rover R30 design program into the upcoming 1 Series, but it was ultimately decided to develop the E8x alongside the E90 3 Series. The E8x and E90 share roughly 60% of their components, including front and rear suspension, structure, chassis, engines, drivetrain, hardware, and electronic elements.
