The E120 Corolla Altis was introduced in mid-2001. It featured a new design and was slightly longer and broader than the E120 for other markets, although it had the same body panels and interior. Southeast Asia, India, and Taiwan were among the markets where the Altis was sold. India received a detuned version of the 1ZZ-FE, which was slower than its competitors.

The distribution in North America was postponed until March 2002. (for the 2003 model year). From 2003 through 2008, the E130 was available in North America. It resembled the Corolla Altis offered in Southeast Asia. The E120 continued in distinct markets from the E130.

In Japan, the station wagon is known as the Corolla Fielder. Production in Japan ceased in January 2007 (for the Corolla Runx and Allex), however it continued in North America until October 2007.
