About Mercedes-Benz R171 SLK-Class

The second generation Mercedes-Benz SLK, internally designated model R171, is a two-passenger, front-engine, rear-drive retractable hardtop roadster that debuted at the 74th Geneva International Motor Show in 2004 and was manufactured and marketed from 2004 to 2010. The SLK nameplate, which is currently in its third generation and is manufactured at Mercedes’ Bremen plant, stands for Sportlich (sporty), Leicht (light), and Kurz (short) (compact).

The R171 differs from its predecessor, the R170, in several ways, including a 30mm longer wheelbase, increased length (72mm) and width (65mm), 40% more high strength steel used, a seven-speed automatic transmission, adaptive two-stage airbags, head/thorax sidebags, and a revised roof mechanism (marketed as the Vario roof) deployable in 22 seconds (previously 25 seconds) with a rotary-pivoting rear window Optional features include remote control of the retractable hardtop and Airscarf, an innovative forced air, neck-level heating system integrated into the headrests.

The fully galvanized bodywork, which has a Cd value of 0.32 and improves static bending by 19% and torsional strength by 46% with the roof down, also has a 3% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency. The design has been aerodynamically optimized to reduce interior draughts with the top retracted, and a fabric windblocker that can be pulled up over the two roll-over bars is included. The R171’s tapering front end styling by designer Steve Mattin was marketed as “Formula One-inspired” by Mercedes. (Source: Wiki)
