About Mercedes-Benz E500

Mercedes-Benz produced a high-performance version of the W124 platform known as the Mercedes-Benz 500 E (W124.036) between the years 1990 and 1995. The creation of the 500 E involved extensive collaboration with Porsche. Mercedes-Benz commissioned Porsche in 1989 to redesign the W124 chassis so that the 5.0L V8 engine that was used in the SL could be installed in it, along with the necessary changes to the suspension system and drive train. This was necessary because Mercedes-engineering Benz’s department was completely preoccupied with the development of the new S-Class.

After the vehicle had been completed, it was discovered that the widened wings prevented it from passing through the W124 assembly line in Sindelfingen in three different places. As a result, Porsche was also tasked with the responsibility of assembling the vehicle. Due to the fact that Porsche was experiencing financial difficulties at the time and the capacity of its factory was being underutilized, this arrangement resulted in increased production at the company’s plant.

During production Mercedes-Benz delivered parts to Porsche’s “Reutter-Bau” plant in Zuffenhausen (an urban district of Stuttgart) where the 500 E chassis were hand-assembled. After finishing up, the chassis were loaded onto trucks and driven to the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Sindelfingen so that they could be painted there. As soon as the paint was dry, the chassis were varnished and then shipped back to the “Rossle-Bau” in Zuffenhausen, which is where the engine was installed and the car was finished. Once more, the vehicles were transported to Sindelfingen in order to undergo final inspections and be delivered. The process took a total of 18 days for each vehicle. ( Source Wiki)
