About Mercedes-Benz CLK430
This cliff’s edge has appeared, and it’s a treacherous one. It’s not hard to figure out the formula: Start with the excellent platform of the CLK320, install a V-8 engine, equip the vehicle with ultra-aggressive rolling stock, and finish it off with some swooping body armor. Result? The mouthwatering CLK430 from 1999.
This new Benz is powered by the same 4.7-liter SOHC V-8 engine that was introduced in the E-Class sedan one year ago. This engine produces 275 horsepower. It takes between 3000 and 4000 revolutions for it to reach its peak torque of 295 pounds-feet. The engine is able to fulfill the requirements for LEV thanks to a cutting-edge design that features three valves and employs two spark plugs in each cylinder. The only available transmission is a multimode automatic with five different speeds, and the 430 version comes standard with Mercedes’ patented Electronic Stability Program system. This system is an option on the CLK with six cylinders.
The experience of driving a CLK430 can be described using words like “solid,” “satisfying,” and “powerful.” Mercedes was kind enough to keep all of the V-8’s good sounds and not tune them out. When the accelerator is pressed, there is a resonant roar coming from the intake, and the exhaust makes low, rumbling sounds. A romp on the gas at 60 miles per hour brings a double-downshift to third gear and a torque-laden nudge in the back of the vehicle. Freeway passing is a hoot. Upshifts are buttery smooth and light on the throttle, taking place at relatively low rpm. However, the crisply gated five-speed automatic transmission will hold full-throttle shifts all the way to redline without making a peep about it. Its acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.5 seconds and its stopping distance of 118 feet from 60 to 0 miles per hour put it squarely on par with luxury hardware such as the Volvo C70 five-speed and the Jaguar XK8.
