About Mercedes-Benz C216 CL-Class
The Mercedes-Benz C216 is the final generation of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class grand tourer. It took the place of the C215 platform. It was replaced in 2014 by the C217 S-Class Coupe. The C216, like its predecessors, lacks a B-pillar to break up the sleek curve of the side windows. Gorden Wagener and Peter Pfeiffer designed the C216 body.
The chassis is based on the S-Class W221 from Mercedes-Benz. The two-door coupé is heavier than the equivalent S saloon, weighing 2,045 kg (4,508 lb), and rides on a full-size 116.3-inch wheelbase (albeit 8.2 inches less than the long wheelbase S-Class, which is the only S-Class sold in the U.S.). Despite its large size, rear seat legroom is limited, as is customary for 2+2 luxury coupés, though the CL has more rear passenger space than its competitors. The boot of the CL is the same size as that of the Audi A8 flagship saloon.
The vehicle was first shown at the 2006 Paris Motor Show, then at the 28th Bangkok International Motor Show (in right-handed drive configuration). In Europe, the vehicle went on sale in early July 2006. (UK arrival spring 2007). CL 500 with 7G-TRONIC transmission and CL 600 with five-speed automatic transmission were early models.
